Diesel Cars Preferred By Younger Drivers

Although the prices of gas and fuel have already started to point down after those months when the prices continued to soar to amazing heights, it looks like new and younger drivers have gone more intelligent when choosing what kind of vehicle to purchase for their own. According to a recent study, these younger buyers are opting to have diesel cars and vehicles so as to save on costs. The extra dollars could then be used to purchase other items that could give their car an added boost or color – from accessories to Volvo performance parts to other things.

However, experts have been wondering if this could all be because of the new kind of fuel that has arrived in the market – the Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, or ULSD for short. This new type of fuel has already been made available in various gas stations all around the country. Aside from this, another aspect that could have made the younger ones turn to diesel vehicles is the arrival of the new 2007 Mercedes Benz E320 BLUETEC which also runs on diesel fuel.

"Generation X" Autos, Unleashed By Future Designers

Engineering and transportation design students from Detroit’s College for Creative Studies and University of Michigan have created innovative car concepts that will rock the automotive industry in the near future. ‘Generation X’ automobiles include Cadillac Entourage, Land Rover Carver and Volvo Stal Concept. These cars were unleashed during the 18th annual American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) summer automotive design internship. The Millennial generation is aiming for something hot, new, stylish, modern, versatile and powerful sets of car. Moreover, to find out what the future generation really wanted, the designer hand was given to the students since they comprise the future of designers. Moreover, they are the ones who can ascertain what the future of cars will be like. Fresh ideas, concepts and innovations evolved through 2 distinct perspectives – harmony of product concept and mechanics. During the internship, the students were exposed to steelmaking and vehicle manufacturing scenes. Students were also introduced to some steel mills, stamping plants, engineering facilities and design studios, to give them insights about the whole process of designing and manufacturing cars. They were also exposed to the different stages, processes and materials that make up the automotive industry. The internship program was heightened by the presentation of three aforementioned ‘future vehicles’. The first prototype presented was that of Cadillac Entourage, a sport luxury sedan designed by Alex Alequin and engineered by Sathish Dhandapani. High-strength steels, glass and other quality materials were used to provide luxury and safety. Land Rover Carver, the second prototype presented was designed by Byung Cho and engineered by Sungchul Choi. It uses the strength, safety, and the versatility of advanced high-strength steels that transform the crossover into a full all-terrain vehicle. The third prototype was that of Volvo Stal which was designed by Carrie Fodor and engineered by Aditya Rajderkar. The car is a solid structure boasting fluidity and simplicity. Some parts used were similar to that of Volvo C70 parts. According to Bryon Fitzpatrick, chairman, Transportation Design for CCS, “The AISI internship allows the students to experience working with flexible manufacturing processes and materials to meet the design requirements shaped by the automotive industry. Students gain a breadth of knowledge in new steel applications and incorporate design elements that can be used to meet future needs such as safety, affordability, and fuel efficiency.”

As a former news correspondent for an auto-related websites, Kevin has gathered extensive knowledge and experience in the automotive industry. This 34 year old father of three from Pennsylvania is a genuine car lover.

Taking Care of Your Volvo’s Cooling System

All automobiles are equipped with an internal combustion engine. Put simply, the internal combustion engine converts fuel into motion so that the automobile can move. To create motion from gasoline, it has to be burned inside the engine, thus the term internal combustion. There are different types of internal combustion engines including diesel engines, gas turbine engines, HEMI engines, rotary engines, and two–stroke engines. But, whatever the type of internal combustion engine, one thing is common to all – all of them produce heat and waste gases and compounds. Overheating is one of the dangers of combustion. When this happens, the engine can break down if it cannot dissipate the heat that has built up in its chambers.

Temperatures inside the engine can rise to over 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Such a high temperature will put serious stress on the engine’s parts. The engine parts will have to work harder as the metal expands. The lubricant will also get thinner as the temperatures rise creating more friction between the metal parts in contact with each other. The pistons, cylinders and other essential parts of the engine is subjected to extreme stress if the heat does not escape. Thus, the cooling system of an automobile is very important.

For a country of only nine million people, Sweden has certainly left its mark on the world, particularly on the automotive industry. Two car makers, Volvo and Saab, hail from this Nordic nation. Interestingly, both car makers are now part of two American auto giants, but their legendary quality and engineering continues to shape the industry.

Changes in the global auto industry during the 1980s and 1990s meant that many smaller players would have to merge in order to survive.
