Save on Gas Sensibly and Sanely

If some people had their way, you’d be driving a small hybrid powered vehicle with no choice of other types of cars to own. While a gas-electric hybrid is fine for some folks, the majority of American drivers want the power and responsive of a trusty internal combustion engine and are not interested in being told which kind of car they must drive. Yet, saving on gas is a universal concern one that nearly every driver considers each time he or she stands at the gas pump. I doubt that there are many folks who give no thought to paying $3 per gallon for gasoline and fill ups costing $40, $60, even $80 or more are no fun. While you can’t control OPEC, you can squeeze more mileage out of your current vehicle thereby reducing your pain at the pump. Read on and we’ll explore several sensible and sane fuel saving options that can help you today:

Easy on the Brakes. If you slam on the brakes, chances are you also press the pedal to the medal. Jackrabbit starts will get you there, but you’ll also gobble up more gasoline than you can imagine. Ease up on the gas pedal and you could see your fuel economy jump by 3 to 5%.

Ethanol Fact Sheet: 18 Things To Know

Due to the price of gasoline, world tensions, and environmental issues there has been a lot in the news lately regarding alternative-fuels. One of the more talked about alternative-fuels is ethanol, what follows is a basic fact sheet on this popular biofuel.

• Ethanol is a vegetable oil based fuel as opposed to standard petroleum fuel.

Hemp Can Be Used to Make Ethanol

Recently in an online think tank forum a gentleman mentioned that Hemp contains about 4 times the cellulose value to make Ethanol as Corn. Oh I can hear the critics now; “Just Say No to Ethanol!” or “This is your car on drugs!” In fact when I first heard it, I thought well here is a some pothead who has some drug induced inner thought, wishing to share it with the world online while getting his fix of the Munchies, with a large pepperoni pizza and enough Doritos to last the night?

Well it turns out this gentleman who mentioned this is right? Can you believe it; that is just too funny. Turn drugs into fuel; everyone wins? Although there are some other issues to this of course for instance another think tanker asks:

Ethanol Basics

The use of ethanol as an alternative fuel is becoming increasingly popular by ever conscious consumers wishing to do their little bit for the planet. It may even be a better alternative to bio fuel, it seems that it is a lot more pleasant to make at any rate.

What is Ethanol? Ethanol is a grain alcohol, or plant mass formula derived from the natural sugars found in bio mass, or vegetation such as corn, wheat, barley, potatoes and sugar cane. This is then processed to make a renewable form of fuel or fuel additive, which is both cost effective and good for the planet. Many cars are able to run on Ethanol and gasoline mixtures. Although at the moment, the mixtures are only a ratio of 10% Ethanol, to 90% fossil fuel.

BMW’s Hydrogen Fuel Quest

German automaker BMW is on a quest, one that may likely make them the first automaker in the world to produce a fleet of vehicles capable of running on hydrogen fuel. That’s right, BMW is leading the way and if all goes as promised the first hydrogen cell powered production BMW will hit the streets in 2008.

Back around 2000, General Motors announced that they would work toward building a fleet of vehicles that could run on hydrogen power. When that announcement was made few thought that hydrogen technology could be successfully tapped and used in a car. However, if it was to come about, most people thought that it would take at least 20 years to come to pass.

Fuel Economy And Personal Choices

I used to be an over-the-road, long haul truck driver. For a while, I even owned and drove my own truck. As an owner-operator, I became interested in fuel economy, and very aware of how personal choices can affect fuel economy and fuel costs.

I’m off the road now, although I still travel a great deal, mainly by car. Like everyone else, I have listened to, and watched, news stories, discussions, and interviews on the present and future state of energy and energy sources.

Biodiesel v Ethanol Making the Right Choice

I’m sure that you have noticed that there has been a surge in interest in Ethanol as an alternative to regular fuel, especially in the USA. Bill Gates invested the better part of $40m in ethanol production and distribution; even in SHELBY the town Planning Board granted site plan approval and issued a special use permit to Western New York Energy LLC on Monday, paving the way for construction of an ethanol plant.

There seem to be ethanol plants going up all over the place. I can’t help but feel a little nostalgic – after all, when Henry Ford started out his cars were designed to run on ethanol (oil hadn’t really made it onto the scene by then) and in fact he invested considerable sums in ethanol production and distribution. It was only the bully boy tactics of the new oil barons that made petrol and petro diesel the no. 1 fuels in the market.

Bio Fuels Such as Bio Diesel and Ethanol Require Proper Planning

Many people believe that we can simply switch to growing our own fuel and rid America of our addiction to Middle Eastern foreign oil. You wish it was that easy. There is nothing easy about it except the theory itself. For instance first you must grow your own fuel and have proper water supplies.

Then you must refine it and deliver it to market. And still you are not out of the woods yet because you need cars, which can run on ethanol. This means people have to buy cars that run on ethanol but currently automakers are producing 17 million cars per year and only a small percentage to run on ethanol or E85 Ethanol, which is 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline.

Flex Fuel: Will You Bite?

All the talk about gas-electric hybrid vehicles is overlooking another area where fuel economy can be realized. No, I am not talking about diesel engines and I am not even thinking about hydrogen power. Instead, corn powered vehicles are coming into their own. That’s right, ethanol, a fuel that has a history going back a full century, may be the fuel of the future. Is ethanol a good choice for a fuel source? I’ll let you be the judge of that!

Back during the days that Henry Ford was building cars, he designed his Model “T” to run on ethanol, a fuel that is typically derived from corn. His idea was to give the driver a choice between gasoline and this particular alternative source of energy. Historically low gas prices however, made the need for ethanol pretty much a moot point at that time. Why fuel up with ethanol when gas was being sold for a quarter or less?

E85 Availability Problems Persist

E85, the blend of fuel consisting of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, continues to receive plenty of positive press thanks in part to the efforts of American automakers to tout the availability of certain vehicles capable of running on this important fuel source. While the concept of E85 is good — ethanol lowers our dependence on foreign oil and promotes a cleaner environment — its availability is currently very limited. Efforts to change all of that are currently underway, but it could take years to make the transition. Please read on to learn what is being done to broaden E85 availability nationwide.

E85 is not some fad nor is it likely to gain full traction any time soon. Back in the days of the first Henry Ford, the Model T was designed to run on either straight gasoline or ethanol. However, historically low gas prices kept ethanol from gaining ground and this alternative fuel source has never fully caught on.

Why Would Someone Buy An Alternative-Fuel Vehicle?

It seems that whether it’s a movie star talking about their new electric-gas hybrid car or a politician proclaiming the virtues of biodiesel, alternative-fuel powered vehicles are all the rage right now. There are many claims about these vehicles ranging from astounding miles per gallon (mpg) to the peace of mind it gives the driver, but why should someone buy an alternative-fuel powered vehicle?

Many alt-fuel vehicle owners speak of the financial benefits of owning such a vehicle. It is true that you can save money on your monthly fuel bill, depending on what choice of alt-fuel vehicle you drive. Because of the relatively new technology involved, many alt-fuels are just as expensive as or more expensive than traditional petroleum based fuels. It seems that the most money saving option is an electric-hybrid engine, but you usually end up paying more upfront for these as the cost for an electric-hybrid car is greater from the dealership than a standard car.

Bio Fuels, Car Manufacturers and Future Challenges

The United States government is steadfast in finding a solution to breaking our addiction to Middle Eastern foreign oil. This potential challenge will not be easy to grow our own fuel. Biofuels such as Biodiesel and Ethanol are one way that America can break her addiction. However even if we can grow between 15 and 20% of our fuel by 2012 we still face other uphill challenges.

Currently automakers are building about 17 million cars per year and we need them to build cars, which use less gasoline, but they are not doing that. The average car other Japanese automakers gets 23 miles a gallon, while the average car made by US automakers gets 19 miles to the gallon. Both of those figures need to be around 30 miles per gallon and we need to help of car manufacturers to build more high breads and automobiles, which run on E85 Ethanol.

Ethanol and E85 - Fuels Of The Future?

Pure ethanol or E100 is also known as ethyl alcohol or grain alcohol. It is made when corn, grain, or other agricultural products are fermented, distilled, and denatured and because of this, it is a continually renewable resource, a true benefit in the world of alternative fuels. Another benefit is the fact that, unlike many other, mainly petroleum based, fuels, it contributes nothing to the build-up of greenhouse gases. Because of its renewable nature, it is possible to extensively reduce a nation’s dependence on foreign oil products.

Pure ethanol is never used as an alternative fuel, but ethanol blends are. For example, E10 is a fuel made of 10 percent ethanol and blended with 90 percent gasoline. The most common blend is E85, a fuel made of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. E85 is officially classified by the U.S. Department of Energy as an alternative energy fuel. It could be used in most cars today that are run on gasoline with some modification, and new, flexible fuel vehicles, are being developed that could use E85. Recently, lobbyists have been pushing for its use in FFVs or flexible fuel vehicles, alternative vehicles that have a lesser impact on the environment than today’s gas guzzling cars.

Do You Realize You Already Use Biomass Fuel in Your Vehicle

The call has gone out from President Bush to kick our oil habit. For many people, the mention of biomass as a fuel source was a new concept. Little did they realize they have already been putting it into their cars. Nope, that isn’t your dad’s gas anymore.
