Elderly Drivers: Stop or Go?

Without so much as a tap on the brakes, my aunt whizzed through another stop sign.

“What are you doing?” I shrieked. “That was a stop sign.”

Your Worst Driving Nightmare! Driving Instructor in Ireland Reveals the Secrets of Gallic Charm

One of the first articles we published in 2005 commenced the story of a little Gallic number and the horrors of being on the receiving end of a Monday Morning car, or perhaps it was a Friday afternoon example and Les Français were about to demonstrate their Rugby prowess by annihilating their favourite enemy thereby emptying the Factory in record time.

Either way it didn’t make much difference because in all the years of Automotive History there has never been such a car! However if anyone after reading this current chapter can beat the list of faults and eclipse the dissatisfaction rating, we will be glad to hear from them. We might even publish it on our Garage Horror Stories Archive on the Web Site! You are going to have to come up with something the equal of Frankenstein meets Alien or you are simply not at the races! Actually we never got to the races because with just 70 miles on the clock on day two the car went into self destruct mode and refused to take us any further!

Why Checking Your Own DMV Driving Record is Important

There is a Department of Motor Vehicles (the DMV) in most states. This Department is usually responsible for issuing driving licences, maintaining up-to-date driving records including speeding tickets / violation details, DUI records and vehicle registration and vehicle history details. Many DMV web sites now allow you to renew vehicle registration, renew driver’s license, create and purchase license plates, replace driver’s license, purchase an identification card and offer many other services. Someone’s driving record contains a history of their suspensions, violations and other details. Employers and insurance companies often make use of a driving record to make decisions on insurance rates or employment background checks. It’s important that you check your own driving record from time to time to ensure it does not contain incorrect information. Background checks on potential employees are becoming more and more frequent. If you are an employer it’s sensible to include a driving record check as part of any employment background screening procedure. The DMV or RMV (Register of Motor Vehicles) usually deals with the states register of motor vehicles A cars vehicle history should detail if it is reported stolen, been in an accident, any reported odometer fraud, and any reported flood and fire damage. If you are looking to buy a used car then vehicle history records can prove an invaluable resource to background check your potential purchase. A few years back, the only people who had access to this type of personal information were licensed private investigators, police detectives and the federal government. Now with the newly passed laws and databases available you can investigate and examine most driving records including criminal offenses on practically anyone - job applicants, potential dates, neighbors, lost relatives, friends, or more importantly perhaps your own. Just a brief check on the web reveals many such services. Remember it’s always wise to check out which of these services are reputable before giving your personal details.

16 Ways to Drive More and Use Less Gas

1. CHOOSE LOWER OCTANE FUEL. Unless you have a high performance vehicle, there is no reason to purchase high-octane gas. Contrary to popular belief, putting higher priced fuel into your car does not benefit your cars engine or daily performance. Choose a lower octane, lower priced fuel instead.

2. USE THE A/C SPARINGLY. The more you used the air conditioner, the more gas is being used up.

Are You Game for the Track Less Traveled?

Crude hits an all time high and the price of gas is rising faster than the fumes escaping from my open gas cap. Editors rush to publish gas saving tips, “check the tire pressure, tune-up the car, take the junk out of the trunk.” And they go on, you’ve heard the tune.

There is a contrarian view. Over inflate the tires, put extra stuff in the trunk (helmet, tools, driving gloves), check the suspension and the brakes, and pray the nut holding the steering wheel doesn’t lose it going into the turns.

7 Tips To Getting Out Of A Speeding Ticket

Getting out of a speeding ticket doesn’t always have to be a costly affair. Although traffic ticket attorneys are fairly reasonable. One way to get out of a speeding ticket is when you get stopped; show respect for the officer no matter how rude they might seem. In showing them respect they can see that you are not really a threat and may just give you a warning. This doesn’t work all the time, but I have seen it work.

If you get the ticket, you may want to check out the distance from where you are being stopped to where the last speed limit sign was. Was it clearly visible and how far away was it. Some speed limit signs are so far and in between that we tend to forget about them. And sometimes we find that the up keep of the signs is not up to DOT standards. But this is a tricky one. So make sure you know what your saying and doing. A free consultation with a traffic ticket attorney might be wise.

Learning How To Drive

I grew up in the era of moms and dads teaching us to drive. Yes we had Driver’s Ed, however, Driver’s Ed classes didn’t start until our senior year, by then most of us already knew how to drive. After all, at 16 we all wanted the coveted “learners permit!”

My father taught me to drive. First we went over the basics, starting, stopping, the gauges, how the car worked, what to do on wet, dry roads, turns, and anything else my father could think of to have me prepared for any situation. Things you weren’t going to get from Drivers Ed. My dad shared his many years of experience, and it made me a better driver than most of my female and many of my male counterparts.

Are Radar Detectors Legal in the US and in Which States are They Prohibited?

A good number of the people with cars in the United States have their own radar detectors. Their reason is that they feel that the speed limit at present is very low. Most of the American people are not satisfied with moderate speed while driving. They want to be the fastest driver on the road as well as get to the places they’re going in record time; they want to be always in the race.

The radar detector serves as their alarm whenever there are police near them. Once the radar detector alarm sounds, they can ease off the gas and slow down their speed.

Owning A Ferrari-Is It Worth It?

Driving a Ferrari has always been a dream of mine. I am unfortunate that I remember Danny Wild driving his red Ferrari around Europe in the Persuaders on TV back in the early 70s. But then when you do get to drive one, you realise that they are only designed to be driven one way, and that’s fast.

But of course with speed limit, kids, other drivers on the road you will find that only a very small time can be dedicate to driving a Ferrari as it should be. In fact much of the driving you would do is totally unsuitable for a Ferrari. OK I will be honest with you, I don’t own a Ferrari but I have driven one. I hired a car and drove it around a racetrack as it was designed to do, which a qualified instructor of course. This has totally changed my perception of why people must own a Ferrari.
