How Maintaining Your Tires Properly Will Save You Money

For all of you out there that are grumbling about the ever rising price of gasoline, how many of you have truly considered ways that will save your precious fuel. Sure, you probably considered car pooling or maybe are even actively doing it. Others will swelter in the summertime, afraid that using the air conditioner will increase the amount of fuel that is consumed. The question is have you ever considered if your tires are costing you gas money?

When your tires are correctly inflated, it can save you money. If your tires are under inflated, they are pliant and cause too much friction with the road. This causes your engine to work extra, driving up your gas needs. If they are too soft they can lower your gas mileage by .4 percent for every pound in drop of pressure. According to the Department of Energy, correctly inflated wheels can increase your gas efficiency by 3 %. When your wheels are correctly inflated they will offer you a smoother ride, better vehicle handling, and better gas mileage. If you don’t know what the proper pressure is for your car, you can find that information on the inside of the glove compartment, or your car manual. The label will list a PSI, and you should use the highest number possible to increase your gas efficiency. Not only should your wheels have the right PSI, they should also be evenly inflated.

How To Properly Care For And Maintain Your Windshield Wipers

Most of us take for granted many of the wonderful technologies that we have today. One example would be the windshield wipers. Can you imagine not having windshield wipers? Even after the windshield wiper was invented in 1903 it was not electric. Instead, the driver had to reach out the window and do it by hand. This could be kind of tricky and dangerous to do while driving down the road. In 1910, the windshield wiper became a standard item on cars, but was still not made electric for years.

Even though the windshield wiper is a great feature to have, they can still be irritating. It’s amazing how often windshield wipers need to be replaced. This great little invention seems to wear out quite quickly. The rubber wears quickly causing the blade to not properly clear the windshield. Of course the one spot that seems to quit working first is right in the driver’s line of vision. For most people this is quite irritating, and causes a trip to the store for a new set. Here are a few things that will shorten the life of your windshield wipers and have you making the trip even more often.

How You Can Help Save The Environment By Maintaining You Car Properly

With fears of global warming, the care of our environment is continually becoming more of a concern for all. Vehicle owners are no exception, and in all actuality have more to consider than those without a vehicle. Controlling what goes into your vehicle and what comes out, and how much goes in and out, comes with the responsibility of owning a vehicle.

Basic vehicle maintenance will help the overall well being of your car, but will also help the environment. Maintenance on your vehicle should not be done just when the “Check Engine” light appears. Maintenance follows three timelines: one-time only, several times a year and regularly. Upon ownership of your vehicle, make the one-time purchase of a high quality gas cap and make a one time read through the vehicle’s owner manual. Although you probably have more exciting things to do then read a manual, it will be worth your time. Mark the pages that you might find helpful in the future. If you are purchasing a previously owned car and the manual is not with the car, many manuals can be found on the Internet.

Ensure a Pleasant Summer Road Trip by Showing your Vehicle a little TLC

With so many wonderful and interesting U.S. cities, an increasing number of Americans are forgoing international travel in favor of road trips to the beach, mountains, and other domestic hotspots. If you count yourself among them, make sure your vehicle is in good condition before hitting the wide, open road. The following list of summer maintenance check points will help ensure a safe ride to your vacation destination.

1. There’s a lot riding on your tires—make sure they can handle it. If your tires are still in good shape, prevent unnecessary wear by rotating them whenever you change the oil. (RK Toyota technicians recommend a rotation every 6,000 miles.) If the tread on your tires is fairly worn, consider replacing them before departing. If you see the “wear bars” (rubber strips that usually are darker than the tire), replace your tires immediately. RK Toyota technicians also maintain that proper tire inflation is vital. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for the proper pressure.

Synthetic Motor Oil and You - Are synthetic oils a better choice for your car or truck?

To use or not to use, for that is the question (apologies to Shakespeare). Both car lovers and those who simply use cars and trucks to get about, have wrestled in their own minds whether they should follow all the manufacturers guidelines or can they use after market parts, accessories and fluid (http://www.a1-car-truck-stuff.com/aftermarketcarparts)in their vehicles. That battle has been waging for many years and though I’d like to end it here and now, you’ll need to decide for yourselves. Is synthetic oil a better product to use in your car, truck, motorcycle, RV or any other motor? Well, first, lets keep in mind that synthetic oil is NOT man made - it is not an artificial or plastic like substance conjured up in the back of some mad scientist’s laboratory. For if it was actually man-made, we could make it at will and wouldn’t have oil shortages and huge gasoline price increases, would we?

Rather, synthetic oil can be thought of as a base oil that has been molecularly manipulated to function better under stress, heat and friction. As such, it requires crude oil as its base product and is then “built” from there. Additives are added but some of those same additives are also added to “normal” oils as well - so its not an issue of what is in it as much as its how it’s structured.

How To Save Yourself A Ton Of Money By Maintaining Your Car Properly

Many car owners overlook the importance of proper vehicle care. Balancing the tires, checking the mechanical systems, inspecting the ignition and examining the brakes are all key to improving a vehicle’s longevity and fuel efficiency. A well maintained car is a safer and more economical car.

Tires should be checked on a regular basis to ensure the pressure level is appropriate and that wear and tear is minimal. It’s recommended that tire pressure be checked once a month to avoid rolling resistance, a common problem that occurs when tires aren’t inflated with enough air. This lack of air can lead to premature deterioration and additional fuel consumption. At the same time as you check tire pressure, you should also check overall tire condition. If the tire tread is uneven, it could be indicative of over inflation, under inflation or misalignment, all of which can also lead to a shorter tire life span and vehicle handling difficulties. Avoid these potential problems by rotating your tires routinely and testing your car’s wheel alignment by driving at a steady speed and checking to see if your vehicle leans more to one side than another (if so, an adjustment is in order).
