Braking Methods

Modern brakes were invented in the late 19th century, around the same time as the tyre. Up until then, vehicles had wooden wheels that were stopped by large wooden blocks, lowered into position by the driver using a simple lever system. When tyres were invented, the wooden block system wasn’t good enough to stop them at the higher speeds they could achieve, which meant that a new braking system had to be invented.

To see the basic principles of modern braking, it is easiest to look at a bicycle. Basically, when you put pressure on the brakes, the pressure is transferred through cables to pull small pads onto the side of the tyres, and the force of the friction against the tyres causes them to stop.

Ford Fusion v. Lincoln Zephyr: Worth the Premium?

Not too many people compare models from the same manufacturer, it is simply something that just isn’t done. Still, when the models are similar enough in development, yet very different in price, the question to be asked about the more expensive car is this: is it worth the premium? Both the Ford Fusion and Lincoln Zephyr share the same platform along with the Mercury Milan. The base price differential for the two models is nearly ten thousand dollars, quite a big difference for the two cars. Is the Zephyr overpriced? Or, is the Fusion that much more of a better buy? Or, perhaps the answer lies somewhere in between. Let’s check out the two cars and see how they compare.

The Ford Fusion is a welcome addition to the Ford line up as the venerable but aging Taurus leaves the fleet. Along with the full size Five Hundred sedan and the Freestyle crossover vehicle, these new models are part of the overhaul changes put in place by Ford to get the brand moving again.

Brakes First Before Driving

2600 deaths each year. About 100,000 injuries that lead to being disabled each year.

These are the numbers from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA). And these are simply the statistics for effects of crashes and vehicular accidents on the roads and streets of the United States. And with summer vacation coming up, it means many families and groups of friends would be out on road trips to various places around the country. That is why the NHTSA would like all drivers to check their brakes before they do go out and drive towards any destination.

The "Family" Business - The Godfather’s Business or the Automotive Repair Shop?

When somebody mentions “the Family Business” I think of a well dressed, old and skinny Italian man with a scratchy voice and has a name like Tony or Sammy. My Grandfather, who I’ve mentioned in some of my other articles, definitely fits the bill. With just one glass of a good Chianti wine, you might find him in our garden patio, rocking back and forth, singing Italian love songs for hours. He was indeed a short, skinny guy, who talked in a voice very similar to the Godfather and at the age of 80 he still had a full head of gray hair. Give him a mandolin and it was almost like being in an old Italian movie. Well let me get back to what “Family” means to me in a Family Business (beyond that old Italian theme). It doesn’t matter whether it’s an automotive service business, like Sandy and I operate, or a cleaning business, a landscaping business, or even a street sweeping business. You see, when Grandpa owned businesses in his younger days, it was his name, his word, and his values that he was offering. He wasn’t fixing transmissions, brakes, or air conditioning like we do. Grandpa was painting murals on grocery store windows. But like us, he knew if he didn’t deliver good quality work for his customers, his name would be ruined and he might have a hard time finding work - especially in a tight nit New England town. That’s why I like working with businesses here in Austin that are family owned. Businesses that are family owned are much more likely to stand behind what they do because they’re offering far more than a product, their offering the meaning of their word and their reputation. In the automotive business, a family owned business is more than just an automotive repair facility. A family owner, and his hand picked team, can be “trusted” advisors of what you “don’t” need to do as well as what you might want to do now to avoid bigger problems down the road. They’ll get to know you and your car so they remember what was worked on last time and how the problems you may have experienced before fit with what’s happening now (or not). It doesn’t matter whether you’re fixing transmissions, brakes, or air conditioning, or your fixing a dishwasher. Family owners tend to care and so many are so very trustworthy. Family owned automotive repair is much like a family doctor and his trusted nurse practitioner and small administrative staff. In a big hospital conglomerate where Dr’s might be overworked and see you once or twice in an emergency room, they aren’t going to care about you as much as Dr. Mulligan who will be with you for years as your family doctor and knows you and your family’s names and watched your kids grow. In addition, although the hospital doctor might ask you a few questions about what happened to you in the past, he’s really not going to put it together the same as Dr. Mulligan who was there treating your family’s health issues with you. I guess that kind of sums it up for how I feel about family businesses. Many small businesses are indeed family businesses, so when you hear somebody say they are a small business, you may very well be hearing somebody offering the luxury of a family business. More than likely, it will be a business from which you’ll enjoy years of great service.

Is Your Car’s Brake Light Stuck?

When your brake light seems to be always on, then you might want to check it. You see, your car’s brake light may be stuck. You should first check the brake pedal switch. If you do not know where to find this, it is actually that small button that you can find behind the brake pedal. When you press the brake pedal down, this button is actually activated and makes your brake lights go on. Try checking the switch manually. If this seems to be the problem, then you can try giving it more force for it to become unstuck and solve the brake light problem.

Or you can check other parts of your brake system to see which one might be the culprit for your car’s eternally on brake light. You can check the fuse of the brake light and see if there are any damages to it. Also check the light bulbs of the brake light itself. If you simply are stumped, you can bring your car to your trusted mechanic so he himself can diagnose the problem for you. And when he does, he also could expertly find the solution so as to get rid of your brake light problem.

Many Choices for the Volvo 850

The United States met the Volvo 850 as a 1993 model. However, the rest of the world was introduced to this vehicle as a model for the year 1992. The Volvo 850 was crafted and sold as a sedan. Later on in 1994, it welcomed in a wagon model in its family. This vehicle, the Volvo 850, is the first model in the United States that featured a front wheel drive along with an all-aluminum five cylinder engine with twenty valves.

The Volvo 850 has a remarkable interior space of some 99 cubic feet of room. This space was all due to the right mounting of its engine under the vehicle’s hood. The construction and engineering of this vehicle guarantees drivers and owners outstanding road handling, comfort, security, and the Volvo reputation for total safety. The vehicle command respect. It also receives adulation. It has a dynamic sporting style and unequalled poise from the very first time you meet it. Premium Exhaust Systems Rock

Stock exhaust systems are designed to adequately convert unsafe emissions into minimally harmful exhaust. Unfortunately, these particular types of systems are prone to corrosion. It is not unusual for owners to have to replace their muffler, a tail pipe, or even a catalytic converter at some point during the time that they own their vehicle. If automobile manufacturers would only fit their vehicles with premium exhaust systems this problem would cease to exist. Unfortunately, it is the “bottom line” that determines that decision. Let’s take a look at premium exhaust systems as they are definitely something you many want to consider the next time your exhaust system has to be replaced.

When it comes to premium exhausts systems, a Borla exhaust system is the benchmark by which all others are designed. The reason? Aircraft quality material, specifically T-304 stainless steel the same steel that goes into building all those lovely Boeing aircraft you see in our skies, is what a Borla exhaust is made of.

German Vehicles Comparison: BMW Vs. Mercedes

German cars have long been recognized as some of the best engineered and most luxurious cars in the world. Two manufacturers, BMW and Mercedes, rule the roost with offerings from Audi, Porsche, and even Volkswagen getting some attention. Let’s take a look at some current offerings from these Bavarian giants and see how they are impacting the auto industry.

BMW – Give BMW credit for moving outside of the box by building a plant in South Carolina. Opened in 1994, the Spartanburg, SC plant has produced the Z3 – now Z4 – roadster as well as the X5 SAV. Seeking to become more of a world player, BMW has also purchased controlling interest in other automakers including Rolls-Royce and Rover during the 1990s. Later, BMW sold off the Rover and MG portions of Rover, but has kept the Mini brand.

Brake Me!

The sound of screeching tires may be one of the most annoying things you get to hear on the streets. However, for some people, the violent screech of tires and the nauseous whiff of brake fluid can mean something totally different: that their brakes are doing their job of keeping passengers safe from a collision.

Brakes are devices that are used to slow rotating wheels until they stop. Friction brakes are the most common examples of such brakes. Brakes like the ones used on everyday vehicles such automobiles, bicycles, trucks and trains use friction between brake pad and a wheel to slow the motion of a vehicle.

Your Vehicle’s Suspension System

Owners of cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs, have differing needs when it comes to their vehicle’s suspension systems. For off road vehicles, navigating uneven and rocky terrain means that a four wheel drive suspension must be up to the task, while a performance vehicle must have a set of shocks that can be put through all of the rigors of road and track driving. In all cases a vehicle’s suspension system is not to be fooled around with; keeping it in great shape will ensure that you achieve the best driving experience for the applicable road conditions and prevent possible safety problems too.

Performance car drivers know one thing: stock suspension systems often leave something to be desired. Unless you drive a Corvette or Porsche, your factory installed suspension system could leave you desiring something better, particularly the ability to navigate turns and absorb bumps without feeling as if you are about to lose control of your vehicle. With that in mind, Koni has developed helpful products with your driving habits in consideration including shocks, coilovers, and struts that can truly keep you in control at all times. Koni shocks, for example, allow for you to tune your suspension with just a twist of a knob. That means if you are planning to navigate the twisting and turning roads of the Rockies, you can adjust your suspension accordingly for maximum control. Once you have reached your destination you can set your suspension back to its previous tolerances.

Keep Your Truck Bed Clean

It was bound to happen. You lend your truck to a “friend” who says they have a couple of pieces of furniture to move and it comes back to you with scratches in the bed area of your truck. It wouldn’t have been so bad had they apologized, but now you have to deal with unsightly scratches that can only make your truck’s value deteriorate quicker. Had you thought about it, you would have stuck a bed liner in your truck ahead of time to prevent the problem from happening in the first place.

The above account actually happened to me as I was trying to help a young couple out with a good deed. I was warned in advance by a friend that the couple would take advantage of me and he was, unfortunately, correct. Let’s just say that it was a bitter lesson learned.

How to Find a Great Auto Repair Shop!

I used to think that all auto repair shops were exactly the same. That’s what my dad told me. Being an at home “master mechanic” who saw cars as just another home repair, dad was sure that all those automotive car fix it folks were just guys with a wrench who had only one advantage over him – they already read the Chilton auto repair guide before him. He spent hours laboring over the guides learning how to fix various things on the car and once in a while he got it right. Ok, I’m picking on dad a bit. In reality before cars got really complicated with computer systems and all these new fangled sensors such as those notorious O2 Sensors that seem to fail with reckless abandon these days, he actually did a pretty good job of getting the old cars to work most of the time. But beyond dad, how do you find a truly great auto repair shop?

The fact is there are a lot of things that you can look for when picking an automotive repair shop. First I think it’s important to consider the credentials. For example, ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications are a great place to start. Some shops have great mechanics who are not ASE certified, but the problem is without the certifications “you” don’t know which of those guys knows what they are doing and which ones don’t. The ASE certification is a great way to validate a mechanic’s skills. If the mechanic received an ASE certification in an area such as brakes, your chances of getting solid repair work are improved. Note that an ASE mechanic may be certified in brakes, but not in engine work, so it’s valid to ask the question of your service advisor as to whether the mechanic working on your car is ASE certified in the area you are going to have service.

That New Car Smell - Tales from the Darkside in Austin, Texas

If you’re anything like me, you love that New Car Smell. There’s no smell quite like it in the whole world. I think the carmaker guys spend a lot of time enhancing it since they know it makes us buy cars faster than Margaritas on Cinco De Mayo. It’s the same strategy the fast food guys use. You know what I mean. You drive by and there’s some short and skinny guy up in the fast food chimney fanning out the burger and fries smell so you can’t help it but stop and buy the Biggie Burger and the Figgy Fries. The problem is it’s only about 1 hour after your done woofing your food before you wish you hadn’t gone to Biggie Burgers and about 1 month before you wish you hadn’t gone to Super Daddy’s Western Car Dealership.

That’s the thing about it. New cars seem like a savvy move when you buy them since for only $349 a month + tax + title + down you can have a great car. I can never quite get the final price of the lease, however, since I can’t add up all those plus signs. They make my calculator’s head hurt. I have to go to the dealer where they have the SuperCalc 5000 leasing computer, which always informs me that my true price will be $100 or $200 higher per month! That’s especially true after I order the Soft Serve ice cream maker option and the Daffodil Lilac scented lambskin covers.
