Audi Shows Diesels Are Ready For Prime Time

Although most people in North America believe diesel engines are slow, rough and decidedly unsporty, Audi has proved them wrong by winning The Twelve Hours of Sebring this past weekend in their Audi R10 TDI. In case you’re wondering, this 650hp racecar is a diesel. It went up against the best from Porsche, Aston Martin, Lola and others to win by 4 laps at the famed endurance race in Florida. Although this is a critical victory, Audi has its sights set on winning The 24 Hours of Le Mans in June and making automotive history.

Audi has spent much time and energy building a diesel racecar. The main advantage is that because diesels are inherently more fuel efficient, they’ll make fewer pit stops than the competition. This strategy clearly worked out.

2006 Audi A4 1.8 T Cabriolet Review

The beautiful 2006 Audi A4 Cabriolet is not just a topless sedan. In order to compensate the lack of a hard top it is remarkably stronger. This means some weight gain (350 pounds to be exact), but 3.0-liter V6 engine the A4 comes with can certainly handle it. The engine is turbocharged 170-hp 1.8-liter and is aided by Audi’s excellent continuously variable transmission. Perfectly tuned suspension smoothes all the bumps while keeping the ride firm.

The interior of the 2006 Audi A4 Cabriolet is clean smooth lines and shapes. You wouldn’t find a lot of strong angles there. It is yet another perfect example why Audi keeps proving right in being on top of the list for classy and comfortable cabins. Included with the convertibles are flood lights, power folding top, power outside mirrors with defog feature, brushed aluminum windshield and cabin surround trim. There is also an optional Sport package if you want stiffer shocks and more aggressive tires.

2008 Mercedes B Class: American Introduction Delayed?

Mercedes has long looked at the entire U.S. auto market as fair game, meaning it is not just a place where it can sell luxury vehicles, but a place to market “low budget” vehicles too. Unknown to some American motorists, the Mercedes name is much broader than simply being a luxury make. Like its German rival, Volkswagen, Mercedes sells cars in Europe that compete directly against the Golf as well as against the luxurious VW Phaeton. Still, introducing a “budget Benz” to America is a psychological hurdle that parent DaimlerChrysler is delaying making a commitment to. Let’s take a look at the proposed B Class and the reasons why the model not make it to the U.S. anytime soon.

For starters, the proposed B Class is based upon Mercedes A Class line of cars. Okay, that tells you a lot! In short, the A Class is a true line of compact cars that are popular in Europe. If you were to give serious consideration to purchasing a Volkswagen Golf you would consider the A Class to be its logical competitor. A slightly larger model, the B Class, makes better use of engine placement and design to produce a car that isn’t much larger than the A Class on the outside, but is almost as roomy as the S Class is on the inside [when configured as a wagon].

BMW On Pace To Outsell Mercedes

It is a close race, one that likely will not result in deep price cutting to move models, but is certain nevertheless to be on the minds of executives employed by two automakers until the clock strikes midnight for the final time this year. What the race is all about is this: the perennial sales battle between two German automakers, BMW and Mercedes, with BMW expected to pass Mercedes in world sales totals for 2005. The ramifications are strong for each automaker and will set the tone for the way each company produces and markets vehicles from 2006 forward.

Mercedes finishing second to BMW is not a comfortable taste for DaimlerChrysler, parent of Mercedes and now owner of The Chrysler Group, maker of Jeeps, Dodges, and Chryslers. Only Volkswagen sells more cars than either make, but when it comes to a predominately luxury line up Mercedes and BMW battle alone amongst German makes with Audi a distant third.
