This young man came to the shop one time with an old pickup…a 1969 Chevy Silverado…He was restoring it.

He was showing me the new seats and new dash…all original.

Auto Aftermarket Sector and Free Trade

Aftermarket auto sector tracks new car sales for about three years of purchase and we know 2000 to current were great years for auto sales. At the SEMA and APEX expositions in Las Vegas in 2002, 2003 we did not see substantially happy faces as we had in prior years. Yes mostly companies have survived the onslaught and downturn in the economy, but the same time we saw a price competitiveness that we had not seen before from foreign manufacturers, some of which cheated our patent laws and others had American partners who were looking to cut costs, cut workforce and get away from over regulation and runaway rules, as well as hostile unions. As we watched the specials by Lou Dobbs on TV, “exporting America” and “outsourcing America” and “immigration to America” we see that the problem must be sold on many fronts. First, we must get rid of his over regulation, second we must demand all level playing field throughout the known world, the third, labor unions and companies need to get on the same page and work towards the common goal and understand that human capital and teamwork are worth more to America long-term did simply slashing costs for shareholders equity and quarterly profits; because, at the end of the day, there is clearly more at stake. For instance if we have no steel production in this country, it costs more to import and steel which drives up the price of the product, to a point at which the customer may opt out of purchasing the item which uses steel in it and to a point at which you cannot afford to pay living wage to produce it, thus you may as well hand over the country to those who are buying our debt while we allow our money to flow to their shores without regards to those things we value in our nation, such as clean air and water, human rights and education, good health and civil societies, yes we are even talking about freedoms we take for granted. If we over regulate the production of steel, gathering of resources, manufacturing then we will watch as it hurts all sectors of our economy.

He raised the hood…slick-as-a-mink!

Almost everything was chrome…the breather, rocker arm covers, timing chain cover…almost everything that was attached to the engine, was chrome…even the alternator.

He was proud of it.

He came down for me to put the timing light on it and adjust the floats on the 4bbl dual line Holly carburetor.

I noticed the grill was out and it didn’t have the air conditioner condenser…the radiator was exposed!

Auto Glass

Glass in integral to the design of every vehicle. It has several functions, from being aesthetic and regal to protecting the passengers in case of accidents. Until 1929 windshields were a luxury. It was only in 1924 that the glass industry made the production of plate glass efficient enough to be used in the manufacture of cars that had become a part and parcel of the social fabric. Auto glass is essential for safe driving, and is specially manufactured in keeping with norms outlined by the Federal Crash and Roll Over Standards. Safety glass, as auto glass is popularly known is of two kinds: Laminated and Tempered.

I asked him why he was running it that way…with the radiator so exposed.

He said he had taken the grill out to remove the condenser, if he decided to put the air conditioner back in, he was going to get a new condenser.

The next week he called to ask how much I’d charge to rebuild that engine.

On his way home from the city that day the engine died, just before he got it home.

He had been listening to the tape player and singing along with it and didn’t hear the gurgling and hissing coming from the radiator.

Seems when he was following a truck into town his radiator caught a small rock, knocking a hole in one of the flues in the radiator.

By the time he got almost home the engine got so hot it seized…locked up.

Moral of story: Don’t drive with a ‘naked’ radiator!

Extended Auto Warranties: How Do They Work?

If you're considering an extended vehicle warranty for your automobile, there are some things you should know. As the name suggests, extended vehicle warranties (also called auto service contracts) offer you an extended period of coverage after your basic warranty expires. If you're spending a good bit of money on a new or used vehicle, it's prudent to consider one of these plans. Repairs can be costly, and get more expensive every day! Before seeking an extended vehicle warranty, it's important to understand how these programs work. Although plans vary depending on the provider, many of them offer many of the same features. Make sure you choose an extended warranty that not only covers mechanical breakdown, but wear and tear as well.
