Cylinder Deactivation: A Good Thing?

Cruising down the highway your car is traveling at a set speed not needing the full use of all of its engine power, but eating up precious fuel nevertheless. That V6 or V8 under the hood could be much more efficient if it employed one important piece of modern day technology: cylinder deactivation. Does your vehicle have this feature? If so, exactly what does it do and is it a good thing? Read on to learn what some automakers are doing to conserve fuel without making significant changes to your vehicle. Elevated fuel prices have consumers scrambling for answers. Some are switching to hybrids, others to diesel, while still others are choosing smaller and lighter vehicles all in a bid to save on fuel. While no one quite knows what the long term fuel prices will be, automotive manufacturers are able to squeeze out better fuel mileage through a rather simple technological change: cylinder deactivation. Cylinder deactivation works this way: let's say you are cruising down the interstate at a set speed of about 65 miles per hour. The road surface is flat therefore there isn't a whole lot of demand on your engine. Instead of running all six or eight cylinders, why not run your engine on three or four?

Spring Checklist #2: Mechanical Services to Schedule with your Auto Technician from RK Auto Group

Now scheduling with your service center is easy, thanks to this handy checklist of items for the spring season. Don’t miss the first checklist, with items you can do yourself.

    1. First, find a quality service shop. Look for one that services cars equal in value to your own (their parking lot will speak volumes!). Go inside and check out the equipment in the service bays (for example, our RK Chevrolet service center has state-of-the-art, computerized equipment. This facilitates faster diagnosis and repair, getting you back on the road quicker.) To find out the qualifications of the technicians, scan the walls for trade school diplomas, certificates of advanced course work and training classes.

    2. Have your technician check the tightness and condition of belts, clamps, and hoses. Anything that is worn or damaged should be replaced to prevent sudden breakdowns.

    3. If your air conditioner system is faulty, have it checked. Air conditioners on older vehicles often contain ozone-depleting chemicals that could be released into the air if the system isn’t working properly.

Why Choose Alloy Wheels? A set of aftermarket alloy wheels will improve the appearance of your car and make it stand out from the crowd. Alloy wheels will reduce the unstrung weight of a vehicle compared to one fitted with standard steel wheels. As a result your car will benefit from precise steering as well as slightly better fuel economy.

    4. If your engine is experiencing hard starts, rough idling, or stalling, have it fixed. This will improve your gasoline mileage and prevent minor problems from becoming expensive repairs later on.

    5. Don’t neglect your transmission. RK Toyota technicians report that routine service can eliminate costly repairs down the road.
